Second Life group limits suck!

The post is cross-posted from http://www.daikonforge.com/webtab/2008/01/14/second-life-group-limits-suck/

Recently, I was talking with Jessica Lindsay (who was extremely helpful in testing my SCS swords before I joined C:SI) about putting a vendor in her new shop Pain Toys, and as is extremely common in such situations I needed to weed through my groups to determine which ones I could leave in order to join one that allowed me to leave a vendor on her group-owned land.

I think that when LL implemented groups and the associated group controls and functionality, they were - as is so often the case - somewhat myopic about how important a role groups would one day play in resident business (and let us not forget that thousands of us originally joined Second Life at least in part because of the ability to run a microbusiness).  The limit when I joined was, I think, 15 groups.  This would likely be adequate for social groups for all but the most avid social butterfly, but is nowhere near adequate for business purposes.  Even the current limit of 25 groups is stiflingly small when it comes to trying to run a successful business in-world.

It seems I’m not the only one frustrated with this, and in addition to a Jira issue already having achieved (at this time) 789 votes, there are numerous blog posts by successful in-world businesses and even individuals railing against the group limit and pleading with LL to address the issue, even to the point of starting one petition after another.

It’s such a huge issue for some of us that I’ve even just received a group notice from Xulltana Lowell of the Shadow Samurai clan asking clan members to sign an in-world petition:

Hello my friends I have a favor to ask all of you, if you own a business or you just want to have more room you need to sign this letter or please give me a IM Xulltana Lowell you want to sign up. Its a letter going around to be sent to the lindens to allow us to have more then 25 groups on our person. If you want more groups to have then 25 please send me a IM now to wright your name on this card and send it off. Thanks guys!! May the shadows guide you.

I’d like to ask any readers who’ve not already signed a petition to either follow your favorite link above and sign one of those, or send an IM to Xulltana Lowell to have your name placed on hers.

It’s utterly ridiculous to have to sign petitions when Jira votes clearly indicate a strong resident desire to have the issue resolved, but sometimes Linden Lab appears to need overwhelming action on the part of residents before they take things seriously.

[EDIT] I *do* understand that there are technical issues involved in the raising of group limits, and Robin Linden has some good comments about this on the New World Notes blog, but let me be as clear as I know how to be : These limitations MUST be overcome.  Tough or not, Linden Lab must not punt on this issue, they need to come up with and actually implement a solution.  And they will eventually come to understand this once they see just how many people feel strongly about this issue.
